Do Harnesses Make Dogs Pull More? Yes, Usually

If your dog pulls and you switched to a harness because it seemed kinder, there is a good chance you made the pulling worse. Not because you did anything wrong, but because nobody explained what a harness is actually designed to do.
What a harness is engineered for
Look at a sled team. Every one of those dogs is in a harness.
That is not a coincidence or a comfort choice. A harness is a load-distributing device. It spreads force across the chest and shoulders, the strongest part of a dog's body, so the dog can pull heavy weight comfortably and efficiently for hours.
A standard back-clip harness on your pet is the same tool. It takes force off the sensitive parts of the neck and moves it onto the muscle groups built for hauling.
So when your dog leans into it, they feel almost nothing. They are comfortable, well-braced, and mechanically optimized to pull you down the sidewalk.
The other half of the problem
Beyond the leverage, there is a feedback issue.
A dog wearing a back-clip harness gets very little clear information from the leash. Pressure arrives broadly across the torso, far from anything sensitive, and it feels roughly the same whether the dog is pulling hard or standing still.
Compare that to a slip lead sitting high on the neck under the jaw. A small amount of pressure there is immediately noticeable, so a light signal communicates clearly and you never need force.
With a back-clip harness, the only way to get your dog's attention is to increase the force. Which triggers the opposition reflex, which makes your dog brace harder. You end up in a tug of war you cannot win against a determined 70 pound dog.
What about front-clip harnesses?
Better, and worth understanding accurately.
A front-clip attaches at the chest, so when your dog pulls forward, the leash turns them sideways. It does not remove the leverage. It redirects it.
Where front-clips genuinely help: a handler who is physically outmatched and needs control today while training happens over the next month. That is a real and legitimate use.
Two things to know. First, they do not teach anything. The instant the harness comes off, the pulling is exactly as it was. Second, some dogs develop altered gait patterns with long-term use, because the harness sits across the shoulder and repeatedly pulls the front end sideways. If you use one, treat it as temporary.
When a harness is the right call
I am not anti-harness. There are situations where one is clearly correct:
Brachycephalic breeds. Pugs, Bulldogs, Frenchies. Compromised airways, and neck pressure is a real risk.
Dogs with tracheal collapse or neck injuries. Medical, not negotiable.
Car restraint. A crash-tested harness is a safety device.
Hiking or scent work, where you want a handle and the dog is meant to be out front.
Very small dogs, where a neck injury from a lunge is a genuine risk.
For those dogs, use a harness and do the training with better timing rather than better leverage. It takes longer. It still works.
What to switch to
If your dog pulls and does not fall into one of the categories above:
Martingale collar. Tightens slightly under tension, cannot choke. Good default.
Slip lead. Sits high on the neck, communicates the most with the least force.
Six foot flat leash. Not retractable.
The honest caveat
Switching equipment will produce two or three days of improvement, and then your dog will adapt.
Equipment changes how clearly you can communicate. It does not change the habit. The habit changes when you stop moving forward under tension and start paying the position you want, consistently, for a couple of weeks.
The harness was working against you. Removing it just stops the handicap.
